Cambridge University Press are seeking to appoint a Book Review Editor for the Journal of Social Policy (starting January 2025).
The Journal of Social Policy is the leading UK social policy journal and one of the most important journals in the discipline internationally with an Impact Factor of 2.654. In 2021 it was ranked 8/43 in Social Work, 18/44 in Social Issues and 24/49 in Public Administration. In 2022, it published its 50th anniversary issue. Its wide readership includes all members of the Social Policy Association (SPA) and over 8000 policymakers, academic staff and students across the globe. It is expected that the book review editor will liaise with the editors and the Chair of the Editorial Board as necessary and attend editorial board meetings regularly. The book review section is the responsibility of the Book Review Editor alone and directly responsive to the Social Policy Publishers at CUP. Book reviews are only published within the online version of the journal.
The Book Review Editor would be expected to:
- Solicit the submission of high-quality book reviews, including sourcing books and identifying reviewers;
- Evaluate and proofread submitted book reviews and collaborate with reviewers in the editing process to bring these to the required standard for publication;
- Manage the workflow of the book reviews using ScholarOne;
- Manage and maintain a list of reviewers for the journal’s review section;
- Be responsive to, and liaise as necessary, with the journal’s co-editors, the Chair of the Editorial Board and CUP’s responsible Associate Publisher;
- Attend the editorial board meetings usually taking place in January (virtually) in July.
The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:
- Wide expertise in the field of social policy
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work to tight deadlines
- An extensive network in the field
- Being a paid-up member of the SPA
- Previous editorial experience and experience with ScholarOne would be desirable but is not essential
The appointment is normally for a period of three years.
There is an annual honorarium for the role.
