What now for the Labour government – and social policy? An academic experts round table ahead of the May elections across the UK.
Ahead of parliamentary elections in Scotland and Wales and local elections in England, with the Labour government facing momentous challenges, there is intense media and public interest in what the outcome could mean for both the Prime Minister’s future and the future direction of Labour policy. Following significant social policy u-turns, political mis-steps and in the midst of another war with profound economic repercussions, the government’s past and future aims and strategies are in serious question.
In combination with the forthcoming themed section in Social Policy and Society on ‘Labour in government and its impact on social policy’, this online Round Table offers an opportunity for assessment and debate reflecting on Labour’s record on social policy so far and asking the question ‘what now for Labour in government?’.
Join us online for a discussion with a panel of experts from key areas represented by the Social Policy Association’s Policy Groups – Dr Steve Rolfe (Housing); Dr Sioned Pearce (Employment); Professor Athina Vlachantoni and Dr Suzy Morrissey (Pensions); Dr Sally Ruane (Taxation); and Professor Anna Tarrant (Family), with opening commentary from Professor Kevin Farnsworth drawing on his research on Labour manifesto discourse.
The session will be introduced and chaired by the themed section editors: Prof. Alessio D’Angelo, Prof. Zoë Irving, and Dr Enrico Reuter.
