One of the major steps towards mitigating climate change is to decarbonise domestic heating systems and reduce domestic energy use. To achieve this in the UK, we need to address multiple, inter-connected challenges caused by issues such as the ageing, poorly insulated housing stock, limited public finance for adaptations, and mixed incentives for landlords and home-owner. From a social policy perspective, these challenges are particularly acute for low-income households facing fuel poverty, exacerbated by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
In this online event, organised jointly by the Housing and Climate Justice Policy Groups of the Social Policy Association, we will hear some of the latest research and explore potential policy options.
Nicholas Harrington (University of Glasgow/CaCHE) will present his recent work on the systemic barriers to domestic heat decarbonisation in the UK, and the potential for a progressive subsidy system to overcome these barriers.
Harriet Thomson (University of Glasgow/School of Social and Political Sciences Administration) will present her recent work on the social and environmental impacts of the energy crisis.
There will also be an opportunity to discuss future events and activities of both Social Policy Groups.
