The Social Policy Association (SPA) Code of Ethics and Integrity in Social Policy Research (2026) provides a comprehensive framework for ethical and responsible conduct in social policy research. It builds on the 2009 SPA Guidelines, responding to significant developments in digital technology, artificial intelligence (AI), data governance, research integrity, and the globalisation of ethical research practice.
The purpose of this Code is to guide members of the SPA in identifying, addressing, and reflecting on ethical challenges arising throughout the research process. It emphasises integrity, inclusivity, transparency, and respect for persons, communities, and societies. The Code complements, rather than replaces, the ethical guidelines and approval processes of universities, research councils, and other professional bodies.
