‘Race’ in Social Research: Open and Inclusive Conference for PGRs and ECRs

The first one day ‘Race’ and Social Science Research: Postgraduate and Early Careers’ Conference will take place in early September 2023 (12th/13th/14th – date TBC).

[Note: the below text is sourced from the organisers’ event description]

This postgraduate-led Conference aims to provide an interactive and supportive space for postgraduate and early career social science researchers to present their research and network with peers across the country. The conference is led by a collaborative group of PhD students from the University of York and York St John University.

The conference is funded by the University of York, York St John University and the Social Policy Association.

The conference theme this year is ‘Disrupting Structural Racism and Building Communities of Dissent through Transformative Research’ and we encourage postgraduate and early career researchers interested in these areas to attend the conference as a presenter (verbal or poster) or delegate.

There will be numerous different panels organised around themes, and poster presentations will be held in a space outside of the conference presenting room and displayed in the reception area for attendees to look at throughout the day. We particularly welcome conference presentations on the following topics:

  • Dominance of Western, Eurocentric epistemologies.
  • Extractive research.
  • Positionality of researchers.
  • Critical Research Ethics.
  • Disruptive research:
    –  Decolonial/ Post-colonial/ Anti-colonial.
    –  Queer.
    –  Black Feminist.
    –  Scholar-activism.
    –  Transformative.
